AWMC Seminar Program: The Urban Water Engineers of the Future

The global urban population is rapidly increasing. Two thirds of the world population is expected to live in urban areas by 2050 and most cities are vulnerable to at least one type of natural disaster including floods and draughts. Urban water engineers in modern cities are facing new challenges due to increased pressure on water resources and the need for implementation of new technologies in the different areas of the water cycle to cope with increasing water and pollutant flows and stricter discharge standards. Globally, there is an escalating demand for specialised engineers and managers in the urban water space. The was created to supply this demand, providing integrated knowledge and skills required to grasp the whole urban water cycle and the linkages between its different aspects.

Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) at the University of Queensland is in the ideal position to deliver this comprehensive program. Over the last 20+ years, the AWMC has driven advanced research in water engineering to develop solutions for both traditional and new water-related challenges. AWMC has also a strong capacity-building program, which has graduated over 100 PhD students in the last 10 years.two-year program, run by the AWMC and administrated by the School of Chemical Engineering, and it is a pathway to becoming an accredited engineer. Along four semesters, the program goes through business and innovation courses, as well as advanced technical courses on drinking water treatment and distribution, sewer network and wastewater treatment processes. The Masters students will also have the opportunity to develop projects in association with AWMC’s industry partners, e.g. Queensland Urban Utilities, City of Gold Coast – Water & Waste, Stantec, WA Water Corporation, etc. This knowledge will provide graduates with the skills and integrated vision to design, optimise and manage the urban water infrastructure in the cities of the future.

The Advanced Water Management Centre holds a free weekly seminar series Friday at 9am in the AIBN Seminar Room.
