Synergistic effects using ozone, UV and advanced oxidation in multi barrier treatment processes for potable water and waste water reuse - presented by Jens Sheideler from Xylem

Ozone, UV and Advanced Oxidation Processes are well known in drinking- and waste water treatment processes. They act as perfect treatment barriers for disinfection and micro pollutant reduction. Specific treatment needs in drinking and waste water treatment requires often a multi barrier treatment process to achieve the required treatment goals. Typical treatment targets are disinfection, micro pollutant removal, Phosphor-removal, Total Organic Carbon-removal, Taste and Odor control, and color removal. The treatment train is designed in a way to guarantee compliance with the legislation but also to provide water with a high esthetical quality. A sophisticated water treatment train includes single treatment steps like oxidation, flocculation/filtration and disinfection. Typically each treatment step will get a certain treatment credit per parameter and the final assessment of the process train is the sum of the individual credits. Synergistic effects between single treatment steps in the overall process train are usually not considered in the established assessment procedures. This paper discusses in more detail the synergistic effects between ozone, UV, advanced oxidation and filtration when used in water and waste water treatment trains and applications. One case for drinking water with seasonal micro pollutant removal describes the performance using ozone, UV and Advanced Oxidation and the resulting OPEX and CAPEX. A second case for wastewater with disinfection and micro pollutant removal describes the CAPEX and OPEX for the process combination ozone, filter and UV.
