AWMC Seminar Program: Wonders of Science

Introduction of Wonder of Science Program

Robyn Bull is the Program Manager for Wonder of Science ( ) - located at the Graduate School. Wonder of Science is promoting a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) culture in Queensland schools - where students and their teachers understand the importance and potential of STEM. It is creating aspiration for STEM education thus generating capacity for technical innovation in Queensland and ultimately, Australia. Robyn will present the advantages of Wonder of Science for UQ’s postgraduate students who take up the challenge as Young Science Ambassadors for the Wonder of Science program. There is also opportunity for early-mid career scientists to participate as part of the Flying Scientist Initiative - a partnership between Wonder of Science and the Qld Office of the Chief Scientist. From AWMC, we have Ludwika who has served as a Young Science Ambassador and Shihu is a current Flying Scientist in this program.

Introduction of AWMC Science Outreach program
Science outreach, also called Education and Public Outreach is an umbrella term for a variety of activities by research universities and institutions, aimed at promoting public awareness and understanding of science and making informal contributions to science education. Many people at AWMC have been involved in science outreaching activities. AWMC will contribute further in this area by encouraging students and researchers to use their knowledge to think about creative ways to engage general public especially young people in science and engineering. Dr Shihu Hu, and other AWMC staff who have been involved in outreach activities will talk about their experiences, followed by a discussion on what AWMC researchers can contribute further in this area.
