Title: Addressing Water Quality Issues in Rural Vietnam: the potential role of technologies

Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong (Vice Head of International Cooperation Office, Thuyloi University – Water Resources University of Vietnam) and Assoc. Prof. Ron Johnstone (School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Management, University of Queensland).

As elsewhere globally, issues of water quality and its impact on society are a high priority in Vietnam. Limited access to water suitable for human consumption, for use in food production, and that allows primary contact with minimal health risks are all widespread in Vietnam; especially in rural areas where the physical separation between negative impacts and water consumption processes is very limited or zero. In addition, rural communities are typically amongst the poorest in the country, with limited or no effective infrastructure to manage water resources and water quality.

The current drought and a growing realization that water resources will limit national productivity have led to the need for new strategies in rural water management.

The current work aims to identify potential technologies, which could form part of a solution to particular problems across the range of situations existing in rural Vietnam.

It is envisaged that a more effective approach to water resource management can be gained through better application of “fit for purpose” technologies wedded to innovative planning and strategy development.
